Album Out January 27 Via Spinefarm Records

VENOM announced the January 27 release of From The Very Depths(Spinefarm Records) last week, news that was met with elation among the metal community, from tastemakers to fans. The metal icons, who are pretty much responsible for authoring their own genre, have followed up the album release news by sharing the two-horns-up album artwork.

The cover is visually arresting, featuring skeletal beings bathed in red and orange tones. The image is dominated by the instantly recognizable VENOMlogo, and is a natural successor to the artwork for previous album, 2011’sFallen Angels, also released via Spinefarm.

And to think this is merely the cover! The album’s accompanying music slays, and early praise indicates that this could be one VENOM‘s best releases…ever. Even the album title is 100 per cent ‘Venomous’, referencing the band’s infamous live intro tape.

Screw the holiday season. January 27 can’t get here fast enough!

M:Pire of Evil (former Venom members) release CRUCIFIED 5/7 via Deadline Music‏

DEADLINE MUSIC TO RELEASE CRUCIFIED FROM METALLERS

M:PIRE OF EVIL ON MAY 7

clip_image002

Los Angeles, CA…On May 7, Deadline Music (a subsidiary of Cleopatra Records) will release CRUCIFIED by M:Pire of Evil, the thrash metal project by former Venom members  Mantas (guitar), Tony “Demolition Man” Dolan (vocals, bass), and ex-Throwdown drummer JXN.

CRUCIFIED bulldozes through eleven tracks (including nine Venom favorites from the PRIME EVIL era), opening with the driving “Temples of Ice”  and not taking its foot off the gas through the closing beast, “Taking It All” (which includes the perfect anti- chant).  The riffs are dense and mighty, rhythms propulsive, and the vocals relentlessly intense.  The record takes on dystopian themes of destruction, evil, and corruption and in the case of pointed tracks like “Blackened Are The Priests,” all three.

In 1979, guitarist Jeff Dunn took on the name Mantas and created a musical entity that would inspire an entire subgenre of metal.  Venom combined dark, heavy and loud with a proficiency that created history with two records, WELCOME TO HELL and BLACK METAL, that are considered the gold standard of thrash.  Built on this foundation, M:Pire of Evil formed in the U.K. in 2010.  Their debut record displayed musical integrity and prowess befitting of the legacy.  CRUCIFIED, MoE’s second full-length record, continues that legacy.

To be honest, I don’t know who told me about Bloody Hammers, but I’m glad they did. I anxiously awaited the release of this CD after hearing a sampling online. Bloody Hammers consists of: Vocals, Bass: Anders Manga, Organ: Devallia, Guitar: Zoltan, and Drums: Curse. Mysterious names, mysterious members, good luck finding photographs. They cite the following bands as influences: Roky Erickson, Alice Cooper, Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds, Pentagram, Black Sabbath, Bauhaus, Concrete Blonde, The Beatles, Arthur Brown, The Cramps, The Misfits, Ramones, Venom, Rush, Joy Division, Dio, Captain Beyond, T.Rex, Sisters of Mercy, Dust, Trouble, Danzig, Hawkwind, Hammer Horror, Something Weird Video … everything! How could they not be good with those influences? Let’s get into the record: Stand out tracks for me are “Witch Of Endor”, “Black Magic”, “Say Goodbye To The Sun”, and “Don’t Breathe A Word”.

Dark, brooding, and damn good, this records is hypnotic. While the band has an original sound, there are some comforting familiar riffs here. I find this CD strangely hypnotic and it draws me into it. Well put together and engineered, the dark theme of this work is captured beautifully. Another one  of the things that I love about this CD is the fact that no one tries to  over play each other. The instruments compliment each other, not drown each other out or try to take the spotlight from each other. I have listened to this CD several times through and the flow is awesome. There is truly no filler on this CD, you can put it on and let it go from start to finish. A winner all around! Here’s the video for “Fear No Evil”:
