The first time I heard the track “Brother Go On” by Black Water Rising it stopped me in my tracks. Groovin’ with a heavy vibe it was something special. After searching around for the record, to no avail in the stores, I ordered it online and was completely satisfied. Heavy with killer riffs, powerful lyrics it kept my attention with every song. Here we are years later and there is an impending new release from Black Water Rising and, I nailed an interview with vocalist/guitarist/founder Rob Traynor.

Carrying the 70’s-doom-hard-rock vibe to a new level of intensity and adding new facets to the work of art, Orchid has succeeded in staying true to its roots while refining its trademark sound at the same time.

The Mouths Of Madness instrumental recordings, split into two separate sessions, were done in Hyde Street Studios, San Francisco, Calif. (Dead Kennedys, Mr. Bungle, Joe Satriani, Exodus) as well as in Laughing Tiger Studios, San Rafael, Calif. (Santana, Sammy Hagar), before long-time producer and engineer Will Storkson and his home studio came into play, where the vocals were tracked.

The Mouths Of Madness was mastered by Richard Whittaker, who also took care of the latest Black Sabbath and Thin Lizzy rereleases/analogue transfers. The legendary producer had this to say: “I’ve been a huge fan of Orchid since I first heard their debut EP back in 2009, and they’ve certainly come a long way since then. So, as you can imagine, to be asked to work with Orchid on their records was an honor and a pleasure.

The Mouths Of Madness is such a well-crafted and awe inspiring album. Sonically, it’s 1974 meets 2013 which, for me, takes the Sabath/Pentagram vibe to a whole new level.”

As an appetizer for The Mouths Of Madness, Orchid recently released the exclusive 10″ vinyl EP. ‘Wizard Of War,’ containing a brand new track, a rare bonus track as well as one song off the band’s stunning debut album Capricorn. The EP can also be purchased via the above link.

MY CONTINUING JOURNEY WITH TESLA 04/20/2013 – THE LAZY DAYS AND CRAZY NIGHTS TOUR

tesla_logo

I was “Teslafied” on 03/25/1987 in Albuquerque, NM. My friend Steve and I had bought tickets for the Alice Cooper “Raise Your Fist And Yell” tour. At that point we had never heard of Tesla. When Tesla took the stage and vocalist Jeff Keith announced that we were about to be “Teslafied” we looked at each other in amusement, for about 30 seconds. This band ROCKED! I became an instant fan and have been ever since. I eagerly purchased each new release and caught them several times when they rolled through my town. Years later a very good friend of mine, Mike Araiza, won a chance to play a song on stage with Tesla. That one song turned into several and a long-lasting friendship with the band. A couple of years later that relationship led to a collaboration with Mike’s musical partner, vocalist Jeff Sandoval, and Tesla guitarist Frank Hannon.

FH_SSS_Cover_700

04/20/2013 – My wife and I purchased VIP seats to once again see one of our favorite bands. It was a mellow evening as we waited for the show, there was no opener so the stage was set for just Tesla.

tesla2

After a brief intro the band came on strong with “I Wanna Live” and took hold of the sold out crowd and never let go. Despite a few technical glitches the show went off amazingly. Jeff Keith’s vocals were spot on and powerful as ever. Smiling, and at ease, the perfect host for an evening of Rock N’ Roll. Jeff has a personality that makes you feel like you’re at a backyard party watching your friends band.

tesla3

The rhythm section of Troy Luccketta and Brian Wheat anchored the band solidly. Brian is a joy to watch as a bass player. He doesn’t stand in one spot, as some other do, he plays to the crowd from all over the stage. His playing style is solid and rock steady providing the beautiful low-end to the Tesla songs we all know and love. Troy provides the beat with a no B.S. approach. Perfect timing and giving the band the foundation to rock your ass off.

??????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????

Which leaves me with the Dynamic Duo of guitars, Frank Hannon and Dave Rude. These guys are here to amaze. From heartfelt acoustic, to in your face shred these two have got you covered. Frank and Dave compliment each other so well. The classic Tesla song were played live as if they were in super HD, brilliant, and flawless. Flying across the stage, engaging the crowd, drawing you in to the show. This guitar tag team remains one of my favorites. They have gotten the Rock N’ Roll equation right.

tesla6???????????????????????????????

During the show we noticed that Mike Araiza and Jeff Sandoval (previously mentioned as members of the Frank Hannon band, and close personal friends) had arrived and were enjoying the show as well. We all said hello and hugs were given all around and went back to watching the show.

Jeff Sandoval and Mike Araiza from the Frank Hannon Band.

The evening’s  set list consisted of songs from the vast library of Tesla greats. Tesla gave the crowd their money’s worth and then some. Including: “I Wanna Live”, “Hang Tough”, “Breakin’ Free”, “Heaven’s Trail”, “Mama’s Fool”, “Getting Better”, “The Way It Is”, “Signs”, “What You Give”, “Love Song”, “Edison’s Medicine”, “”Lazy Days”, “Modern Day Cowboy”, and “Little Suzi” as their encore.   When their set was finished the band took pictures of the crowd and thanked and shook hands with as many as they could from the stage.

tesla8

The show was over but the evening had just begun to get interesting. We hung around and caught up with Jeff  and Sharon Sandoval and Mike and Marta Araiza. During our catching up a magic “King” and  “Queen” (they’ll know who they are when they read this) managed to slip us a couple of guest passes to meet the band. All of these years of listening to Tesla and now we were getting the chance to meet them.

20130420_231330

We got meet and talk with Frank Hannon, Troy Luccketta, Brian Wheat, and Dave Rude (Jeff Keith had already retired to the tour bus). We hung around for about an hour and half just talking about projects, music etc. Jeff Sandoval was in full on pimp mode telling the band members about this blog site. He sure made me feel good about what I am doing here on this blog. The guys took a definite interest in it and we shared information for future writings and interviews. Thank you Jeff, Mike, and Marta for the chance to meet this great bunch of guys.

AUTOPSY “THE HEADLESS RITUAL” COMING THIS JULY

Cover art + track list revealed

KONICA MINOLTA DIGITAL CAMERA

CALIFORNIA – July 2 will mark the return of Autopsy, the U.S. master of brutality, with the band’s sixth studio opus of horror and all-out madness, The Headless Ritual, on Peaceville Records.

Featuring the returning quartet of Chris Reifert, Eric Cutler, Danny Coralles, and Joe Trevisano,The Headless Ritual is a relentless monster of violent and brutal death metal mastery delivered in the unmistakable Autopsy style of chaotic riffing, insane solos and doom-filled interludes, all served with the band’s unhinged brand of vocal sickness. The album was recorded and mixed April 2013 at Fantasy Studios, San Francisco, Calif. with Adam Munoz, and features cover artwork by renowned artist Joe Petagno (Motörhead, Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin).

Said drummer/vocalist Chris Reifert, “Expect nothing less than the monstrous brutality that Autopsy has been known to offer. Laurels will not be rested upon, trends will not be followed and mercy will not be shown. Mark your calendars for June and pick out a coffin to lie down and die in. Darkness and death await…”

The track listing for The Headless Ritual is…

01. SLAUGHTER AT BEAST HOUSE
02. MANGLED FAR BELOW

Among the early breed of U.S. death metal pioneers, Autopsy formed in 1987 in the San Francisco Bay Area and released four albums on Peaceville Records. Autopsy triumphantly and officially returned from the grave after a 15 year hiatus with the 2010 EP, ‘The Tomb Within,’ followed by the release of the band’s widely acclaimed fifth studio album, Macabre Eternal in 2011.

PHILIP H. ANSELMO Talks Record Store Day and the Comeback of Vinyl Records with FORBES MAGAZINE‏

PHILIP H. ANSELMO Talks Record Store Day and the Comeback of Vinyl Records with FORBES MAGAZINE

Earlier this week, Forbes Magazine (Forbes.com) posted an in-depth piece on the comeback of vinyl and Record Store Day, written by Tim Clark. In a time where people are quick to label the current state of the music industry as “failing” or “experiencing a downfall”, Tim Clark points out that the independent record store experience illustrates otherwise.

Down vocalist and Housecore Records CEO Philip H. Anselmo was interviewed for the piece, and gave his personal thoughts on the rise in record store activity and how it supports growth in the music business and community. As one of the leading voices of the recent indie label and independent music takeover, Forbes looked to Anselmo has a voice of authority.

From Forbes piece: “When he was younger, Anselmo used to constantly scour underground record stores and to this day still believes in the vinyl format. “Record Store Day promotes this type of passion of having the actual product in your hand instead of just a download,” said Anselmo. “I love having the full album, art, lyrics and I think vinyl sounds better. And as a label owner, it makes me happy to see that people slowly but surely want to have this tangible copy in their hands instead of a free [expletive] download, which is driving me [expletive] bananas.”

Record Store Day is now celebrated on the third Saturday every April is the one day that all of the independently owned record stores come together with artists to celebrate the art of music. Forbes calls Record Store Day, “an industry phenomenon.”

MICHAEL MONROE: Iconic Rock ‘N’ Roll Frontman Releases New Studio Album, ‘Horns and Halos’, on August 27th 2013 via Spinefarm Records‏

MICHAEL MONROEIconic Rock ‘N’ Roll Frontman Releases New Studio Album, ‘Horns and Halos’, on August 27th 2013 via Spinefarm Records

New Video/Single for ‘Ballad Of The Lower East Side’ Released TODAY via YouTube

image001 (1)

In 2010, vocalist, multi-instrumentalist, and uber-energetic front-man and all-round rock ‘n’ roll legend MICHAEL MONROE unveiled his new side project in grand style via an exclusive press conference. Flash forward six months to a full UK tour with Motörhead, and another few months to the release of Another Night in the Sun, a globally-anticipated live album that teased fans clamoring for a final, polished taste of the new project. Finally, roughly a year after MICHAEL MONROE’s original public reveal, the band released their first critically-acclaimed full-length release, Sensory Overdrive, produced by Jack Douglas (Aerosmith, John Lennon). The album went on to win Classic Rock Magazine’s ‘Album Of The Year’ award and landed at #1 on the charts in MM’s Finnish homeland.

In 2012, after touring throughout the UK in support of Sensory Overdrive, Monroe announced that he would go back into seclusion to prepare for the band’s next offering. Monroe’s touring and recording outfit, comprised of bassist Sami Yaffa (ex-Hanoi Rocks/New York Dolls), guitarist Steve Conte (ex-New York Dolls/Company Of Wolves), guitarist Dregen (Backyard Babies, formerly of Hellacoptersfame) and drummer Karl ‘Rockfist’ Rosqvist (ex-Chelsea Smiles/Danzig), worked tirelessly in the studio, providing creative support for a frontman whose reputation is genuinely global and whose influence continues to be felt, with musicians of all ages (from Dave Grohl to the original Gun n’ Roses members) citing Michael’s ground-breaking career as a source of inspiration.

Now after several months, the wait is over.  MICHAEL MONROE can finally reveal that the band’s upcoming studio album, Horns and Halos, will hit stores everywhere on August 27, 2013 via Spinefarm Records. The band offers a taste of the new album in the form of a new single and video for the track ‘Ballad Of The Lower East Side’, which can be watched now via YouTube at this location.

The track includes a nod to Michael’s early days in New York, a city he moved to for a decade following the mid-’80s break up of glam punk pioneers, Hanoi Rocks. The clip – directed by celebrated videographer/photographer Ville Juurikkala, who has photographed Michael for the past 10 years as well as working with Linkin ParkGood Charlotte and HIM, amongst others – features archive footage and photos of Michael in prime Big Apple mode, interlaced with current live and backstage scenes.

“The song ‘Ballad Of The Lower East Side’ is about New York and especially The Lower East Side – what it was way back in the days when I lived  there, how times have changed and how it is nowadays.,” states MICHAEL MONROE. “New York has always been an important city to me since I lived there for 10 years. Two members of our band still live there.  It’s the City of all Cities.”

Stay tuned for more information coming soon about Horns and Halos. To stay up to date on all things MICHAEL MONROE, visitwww.michaelmonroe.com or www.facebook.com/michaelmonroeofficial.
