Little did I know that when I picked Strikes At One as a band to check out I would actually get a chance to see them live and interview them. I received a message from them on Facebook saying they would be playing a show near me on their way to Rocklahoma. We set up an interview and had a good time hanging out. We got to see an interesting set from them (including a rising police car, Beau drumming from behind a plexiglass screen, screams of “Santana”, and a micro stage). All in all an interesting evening from one kick ass band.

Sunset Riot – it’s only just begun!

156031_10151577997310482_431863801_n

There are moments in Rock N’ Roll music that would be cool to have seen. The birth of the Beatles, the beginning of the punk rock movement,Led Zeppelin in their glory days,  Aerosmith when they first hit the scene, Guns N’ Roses when they were still hungry and raw. These are but a few moments in Rock N’ Roll music that stand out. Well my friends, the powers of Rock N’ Roll music have struck again with Sunset Riot.

???????????????????????????????     Hailing from Australia, these guys went to ground and did their homework. Seeking inspiration from their Rock N’ Roll heroes, Sunset Riot delivers a brand of Rock N” Roll that,  while familiar, is uniquely their own.

Members JP – guitars/vocals, Dellacoma Rio – vocals, Ziggy Scott – guitars/vocals, Resh – drums, and Simo – bass,  each bring their unique personalities to the band and give it life and magic. I say magic because I have seen people from all backgrounds simply fall in love with the band and their music after witnessing a Sunset Riot show. Yes Sunset Riot puts on a “show”, no getting onstage and staring at their shoes for these guys. They take us back to a time when Rock N’ Roll was fun and it was an event. Exploding onto stage with swagger and power they will make you smile.

???????????????????????????????

Dellacoma Rio- vocals; Del brings everything you want in a front man. He does not limit himself to the stage, at one show I was at he actually left the venue and was singing to the people outside the club and encouraging them to come in, at another he jumped up and was swinging from the light rigging. Del draws you into the show by coming into the crowd and singing with you. Then, of course, there is the sex appeal for the ladies. He plays up to the women by singing to them and giving them that moment of unabashed enjoyment. Del has definitely brought back the iconic figure of the front men of old.

Del working the crowd

JP – guitars/vocals: JP brings that classic guitar hero right back around. Feeling every note that he plays, and showing it, he will make you feel them too. JP has taken all that is cool about guitar players and amplified to 11 and beyond. You will hear nods to some of your favorite guitarists of the past in JP’s style of playing. Jumping in periodically on vocals JP rounds out his all out rock star image.

JP - owning on guitar

JP – owning on guitar

Ziggy- guitars/vocals: Ziggy gives Sunset Riot that twin guitar sound we all know and love. Ziggy’s playing  complements JP’s so well and yet stands out on its own. From rhythm to lead his toolbox of tricks is top-notch. Providing backup vocals and harmonies makes Ziggy invaluable to the Sunset Riot sound.

Ziggy an all out rockstar

Resh – drums: Although quiet and reserved in person, Resh is a beast onstage. An impeccable drummer with just enough flair to compliment his playing without hindering it. I was quite surprised to recently learn that he also plays guitar making him a musician of top-notch caliber.  Smiles and positive mental attitude make Resh a joy to know.

Resh the master of the beat

Resh the master of the beat

Simo – bass: Young and full of enthusiasm Simo is quite the solid player. Simo flies about the stage as if he had wings,  all smiles and hair. Simo’s style of playing is reminiscent of early Cliff Burton and Jason Newstead. Holding down the bottom end in perfect sync with Resh,  Simo is a recent addition to Sunset Riot and an addition that was well-played by them.

Simo spreading the love

Simo spreading the love

Sunset Riot is a band poised on greatness. They are ready to champion the cause of feel good Rock N’ Roll that we all remember and love. The band has fun on stage, smiles, high fives, playing off of each others moves.

Sunset Riot LIVE!!!

Sunset Riot LIVE!!!

The music of Sunset Riot is infectious, you WILL find yourself humming or singing their songs after being exposed to them.   In a recent conversation with Del’s father, Terry, he mentioned to me of a 90-year-old woman and her 40-year-old son who caught Sunset Riot at a show and were impressed enough with the band they went and introduced themselves.

My good friend and brother Charlie Owens is the one responsible for introducing me to this band and he has been their champion for quite a while now. I,  in turn, have introduced others to this band. They are totally self funded and are currently on their third US tour entirely on their own. It will take all of us to help this band achieve their place in the music world that they deserve. So do Rock N’ Roll a favor and spread the word.

It’s been almost a year since I last saw Sunset Riot. I met this OZ-some band last year and it was love at first sight. Down to earth, personable, and hard working, Dellacoma, JP, Resh, Ziggy, and Simo welcomed me as family with hugs and much love. When we saw them before the show last night it was like seeing family that lives far away and you get to see sparingly. We caught up for a moment and then the madness began.

Ziggy, Simo, the Hellion, JP, Dellacoma, Resh

Ziggy, Simo, the Hellion, JP, Dellacoma, Resh

After an introduction by my brother Charlie Owens the band took the stage and never gave it back. Whirling about the stage like dynamos Sunset Riot delivered their brand of “OZ-some” Rock N’ Roll and then some. This combination of musicians has the right chemistry for success. JP owns the right side of the stage and delivers guitar playing like the guitar gods of old.

the ever amazing JP

Like a madman about the stage, Ziggys’ guitars provide the perfect balance to JP.

Simo, who joined the band on their tour last year, is the perfect fit for Sunset Riot. His bass playing style is aggressive and solid.

Simo, you know you love him!

Ahhh Resh, this guy knows his way around a drum kit. He keeps the band in perfect rhythm.

Resh keeping perfect time as usual

And then there’s Dellacoma, the epitome of a rockstar. Slithering around the stage like a wild animal, driving the women crazy with his sensuality. Making the crowd feel like they are part of the show, sharing his microphone with various crowd members at times, singing to various people, thoroughly bringing  the crowd into his space.

What can I say about a Sunset Riot performance? Well here’s taste, and if you wanna know more you’re gonna have to see for yourself:

     UPDATE:

After spending most of today with the guys just hanging out I was asked by Ziggy “Why do you like Sunset Riot?” Here is my answer:

Sunset Riot is a band that just plain makes you feel good. Sometimes when things just seem to piss me off, there is Sunset Riot playing inside my head. The songs get inside you and just fill you with good vibes. Catchy, hook laden, flowing lyrics, combined with down to earth band members, what else could a music lover ask for? A Sunset Riot show? An hour of leaving your cares at the door, hanging with family and friends, a smile from ear to ear, and that smile will stay with you for a while.

MY CONTINUING JOURNEY WITH TESLA 04/20/2013 – THE LAZY DAYS AND CRAZY NIGHTS TOUR

tesla_logo

I was “Teslafied” on 03/25/1987 in Albuquerque, NM. My friend Steve and I had bought tickets for the Alice Cooper “Raise Your Fist And Yell” tour. At that point we had never heard of Tesla. When Tesla took the stage and vocalist Jeff Keith announced that we were about to be “Teslafied” we looked at each other in amusement, for about 30 seconds. This band ROCKED! I became an instant fan and have been ever since. I eagerly purchased each new release and caught them several times when they rolled through my town. Years later a very good friend of mine, Mike Araiza, won a chance to play a song on stage with Tesla. That one song turned into several and a long-lasting friendship with the band. A couple of years later that relationship led to a collaboration with Mike’s musical partner, vocalist Jeff Sandoval, and Tesla guitarist Frank Hannon.

FH_SSS_Cover_700

04/20/2013 – My wife and I purchased VIP seats to once again see one of our favorite bands. It was a mellow evening as we waited for the show, there was no opener so the stage was set for just Tesla.

tesla2

After a brief intro the band came on strong with “I Wanna Live” and took hold of the sold out crowd and never let go. Despite a few technical glitches the show went off amazingly. Jeff Keith’s vocals were spot on and powerful as ever. Smiling, and at ease, the perfect host for an evening of Rock N’ Roll. Jeff has a personality that makes you feel like you’re at a backyard party watching your friends band.

tesla3

The rhythm section of Troy Luccketta and Brian Wheat anchored the band solidly. Brian is a joy to watch as a bass player. He doesn’t stand in one spot, as some other do, he plays to the crowd from all over the stage. His playing style is solid and rock steady providing the beautiful low-end to the Tesla songs we all know and love. Troy provides the beat with a no B.S. approach. Perfect timing and giving the band the foundation to rock your ass off.

??????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????

Which leaves me with the Dynamic Duo of guitars, Frank Hannon and Dave Rude. These guys are here to amaze. From heartfelt acoustic, to in your face shred these two have got you covered. Frank and Dave compliment each other so well. The classic Tesla song were played live as if they were in super HD, brilliant, and flawless. Flying across the stage, engaging the crowd, drawing you in to the show. This guitar tag team remains one of my favorites. They have gotten the Rock N’ Roll equation right.

tesla6???????????????????????????????

During the show we noticed that Mike Araiza and Jeff Sandoval (previously mentioned as members of the Frank Hannon band, and close personal friends) had arrived and were enjoying the show as well. We all said hello and hugs were given all around and went back to watching the show.

Jeff Sandoval and Mike Araiza from the Frank Hannon Band.

Jeff Sandoval and Mike Araiza from the Frank Hannon Band.

The evening’s  set list consisted of songs from the vast library of Tesla greats. Tesla gave the crowd their money’s worth and then some. Including: “I Wanna Live”, “Hang Tough”, “Breakin’ Free”, “Heaven’s Trail”, “Mama’s Fool”, “Getting Better”, “The Way It Is”, “Signs”, “What You Give”, “Love Song”, “Edison’s Medicine”, “”Lazy Days”, “Modern Day Cowboy”, and “Little Suzi” as their encore.   When their set was finished the band took pictures of the crowd and thanked and shook hands with as many as they could from the stage.

tesla8

The show was over but the evening had just begun to get interesting. We hung around and caught up with Jeff  and Sharon Sandoval and Mike and Marta Araiza. During our catching up a magic “King” and  “Queen” (they’ll know who they are when they read this) managed to slip us a couple of guest passes to meet the band. All of these years of listening to Tesla and now we were getting the chance to meet them.

20130420_231330

We got meet and talk with Frank Hannon, Troy Luccketta, Brian Wheat, and Dave Rude (Jeff Keith had already retired to the tour bus). We hung around for about an hour and half just talking about projects, music etc. Jeff Sandoval was in full on pimp mode telling the band members about this blog site. He sure made me feel good about what I am doing here on this blog. The guys took a definite interest in it and we shared information for future writings and interviews. Thank you Jeff, Mike, and Marta for the chance to meet this great bunch of guys.

PHILIP H. ANSELMO Talks Record Store Day and the Comeback of Vinyl Records with FORBES MAGAZINE‏

PHILIP H. ANSELMO Talks Record Store Day and the Comeback of Vinyl Records with FORBES MAGAZINE

Earlier this week, Forbes Magazine (Forbes.com) posted an in-depth piece on the comeback of vinyl and Record Store Day, written by Tim Clark. In a time where people are quick to label the current state of the music industry as “failing” or “experiencing a downfall”, Tim Clark points out that the independent record store experience illustrates otherwise.

Down vocalist and Housecore Records CEO Philip H. Anselmo was interviewed for the piece, and gave his personal thoughts on the rise in record store activity and how it supports growth in the music business and community. As one of the leading voices of the recent indie label and independent music takeover, Forbes looked to Anselmo has a voice of authority.

From Forbes piece: “When he was younger, Anselmo used to constantly scour underground record stores and to this day still believes in the vinyl format. “Record Store Day promotes this type of passion of having the actual product in your hand instead of just a download,” said Anselmo. “I love having the full album, art, lyrics and I think vinyl sounds better. And as a label owner, it makes me happy to see that people slowly but surely want to have this tangible copy in their hands instead of a free [expletive] download, which is driving me [expletive] bananas.”

Record Store Day is now celebrated on the third Saturday every April is the one day that all of the independently owned record stores come together with artists to celebrate the art of music. Forbes calls Record Store Day, “an industry phenomenon.”

MICHAEL MONROEIconic Rock ‘N’ Roll Frontman Releases New Studio Album, ‘Horns and Halos’, on August 27th 2013 via Spinefarm Records

New Video/Single for ‘Ballad Of The Lower East Side’ Released TODAY via YouTube

image001 (1)

In 2010, vocalist, multi-instrumentalist, and uber-energetic front-man and all-round rock ‘n’ roll legend MICHAEL MONROE unveiled his new side project in grand style via an exclusive press conference. Flash forward six months to a full UK tour with Motörhead, and another few months to the release of Another Night in the Sun, a globally-anticipated live album that teased fans clamoring for a final, polished taste of the new project. Finally, roughly a year after MICHAEL MONROE’s original public reveal, the band released their first critically-acclaimed full-length release, Sensory Overdrive, produced by Jack Douglas (Aerosmith, John Lennon). The album went on to win Classic Rock Magazine’s ‘Album Of The Year’ award and landed at #1 on the charts in MM’s Finnish homeland.

In 2012, after touring throughout the UK in support of Sensory Overdrive, Monroe announced that he would go back into seclusion to prepare for the band’s next offering. Monroe’s touring and recording outfit, comprised of bassist Sami Yaffa (ex-Hanoi Rocks/New York Dolls), guitarist Steve Conte (ex-New York Dolls/Company Of Wolves), guitarist Dregen (Backyard Babies, formerly of Hellacoptersfame) and drummer Karl ‘Rockfist’ Rosqvist (ex-Chelsea Smiles/Danzig), worked tirelessly in the studio, providing creative support for a frontman whose reputation is genuinely global and whose influence continues to be felt, with musicians of all ages (from Dave Grohl to the original Gun n’ Roses members) citing Michael’s ground-breaking career as a source of inspiration.

Now after several months, the wait is over.  MICHAEL MONROE can finally reveal that the band’s upcoming studio album, Horns and Halos, will hit stores everywhere on August 27, 2013 via Spinefarm Records. The band offers a taste of the new album in the form of a new single and video for the track ‘Ballad Of The Lower East Side’, which can be watched now via YouTube at this location.

The track includes a nod to Michael’s early days in New York, a city he moved to for a decade following the mid-’80s break up of glam punk pioneers, Hanoi Rocks. The clip – directed by celebrated videographer/photographer Ville Juurikkala, who has photographed Michael for the past 10 years as well as working with Linkin ParkGood Charlotte and HIM, amongst others – features archive footage and photos of Michael in prime Big Apple mode, interlaced with current live and backstage scenes.

“The song ‘Ballad Of The Lower East Side’ is about New York and especially The Lower East Side – what it was way back in the days when I lived  there, how times have changed and how it is nowadays.,” states MICHAEL MONROE. “New York has always been an important city to me since I lived there for 10 years. Two members of our band still live there.  It’s the City of all Cities.”

An interview with Our Precious Demise

the Hellion: There are always stories about the formation of bands. I especially like the one where veterans from other bands come together. Tell us the story of Our Precious Demise.

CP – This is a tricky question. I’ll just tell the story of my experience: I was in a cover band, having some fun and looking for a project that I wanted to put all of my attention toward, when I met Charles. He had talked to me about getting together and jamming sometime. I was like, “yeah cool, we will do that sometime”. Not really giving it a lot of thought. Some time went by and again, he asked me to come jam with him and this guy that’s playing guitar with him. At this time, I had the cover band thing, I was sitting in for some friends for a few weeks and had a few other offers that I wasn’t really impressed with, so I said, What the hell, it can’t hurt to just go jam. So, we got out there and really hit it off. Charles had a style about his playing that I really could relate too. After a while we had some songs together and then Joe came in the picture and really held the bass down like a pro. We added another member and called ourselves THRAWL. (I prefer to not mention the other members names) We went at it for about a year or so, and came to the conclusion that we just didn’t like the direction a few of the guys were taking it, so we decided to call it. We took a break for a while and then Charles, Joe and myself decided we would put something together that was more of what we were looking for. We wrote some stuff and tried out some people. Some of the local “ heroes” so to speak. nothing was really catching. Well, Cat and I went to high school together, and got back in touch through Facebook. We hung out and caught up with how life has been and so on… Well, one night we went to a karaoke bar and she sang a few songs and I was like, wow, this girl really has a great voice. Then she went up and did “Enter Sandman” by Metallica. I was like, “Holy shit, did I just hear that coming from this little girl???” Long story short, we talked about it and got her to come out and give it a try. Best thing that could have happened to all of us. After playing for over a year, we wanted to get some more going on in the mix. We wanted a lead guitar player. You would think, those are everywhere, but no, not if your serious about what you’re looking for. About 8 or 9 months into looking, we brought Brandon in for a try at it. This guy learned our songs in a short time and was playing them as if he had been there the whole time, with solos and all. This is a guy with some amazing skills. The shoe fit so we are wearing it proudly. And that’s my take on how it all came together.

CAT – I had always been in cover bands, seemed to get stereotyped and talked into singing chick songs and put in a certain category, it always irked me, because inside, I wanted to be wailing something from Metallica or even Pantera… When this opportunity arose to front-woman a metal band, and write my own lyrics, you can bet,  it was a HUGE release.  FINALLY I can do what I want and sing how I wanna sing it and not be compared to the way the ‘original’ band did it, as seems always the case of cover bands.

BP –  When I first met these guys it was bout 2 yrs ago. I tried out for them but the situation wasn’t right. I went to go play in another band for 2 yrs and the band split up. I got a message from Charles asking if I want to try again that he wanted another guitarist. so I jumped on the opportunity cause I really want to play with these guys, so I learned 2 songs and tried out again. they loved what I did and what I can bring to the band. and I can learn the songs really fast and I’m a serious player and that I want to play their style of metal.
the Hellion:  OPD cites influences from Sabbath to LOG. Are there any influences from outside the genre that have affected you?

CP – I was putting on records for my dad and his friends at like 5 and 6 years old, that were Black Sabbath, Ted Nugent, Judas Priest, Rainbow, Led Zeppelin, and all kinds of bands in that era. Those bands have been what drove me to being a musician. I have much respect and love for other types of music, but as far as influential, it’s always been the metal world for me.

CAT – I grew up as the youngest of four siblings, two older brothers and an older sister, heard everything from Willie Nelson, Johnny Cash, (Bluegrass) Kiss, Styx, Journey, Rush, and so on… I didn’t mind any types of music over another growing up, every different genre would touch upon a specific emotion, and growing up, I wasn’t even aware that different genres existed, music was music – I listened to what I wanted to feel at the moment.

BP –  I have tons of influences. just not enough time in the day to go over all of them. But the main ones are Megadeth, Dream Theater. Death, Yngwie Malmsteen, Cannibal Corpse. Pantera. Lamb of God, Cacophony, dying fetus, I’m a huge fan of the 80’s shred movement. Steve Vai, Tony McAlpine, Vinnie Moore, and Joe Satriani. Those guys helped shape my style as a lead guitarist.
the Hellion: How does OPD go about writing new music? Some bands get together and jam until new material comes out, and others bring in their separate pieces and weld them together. What works for OPD?

CP – Usually Charles will write a structure of some guitar riffs and present them to the band. From there we analyze, dissect, and rearrange as we feel things need to go, everyone spices up their parts, and we call it a song.

BP – I haven’t gotten together and wrote any songs with them yet when Charles was teaching me the songs if I found a spot to put a solo and were it felt right i wrote it in that spot.

the Hellion: What was the driving force that guided you towards performing music?

CP – Back when I was a kid, me and my best friend at the time would act out songs we were listening to. He may be using the toy box to act like the drummer and I have a tee-ball stand set up to sing in while using a plastic bat to play air guitar, and vice versa. This was the beginning for me. The desire and drive had been planted like a seed.

CAT – Growing up I’d CRANK up the house stereo and sing at the top of my lungs, no one was ever around, I just knew I loved it….:) My dad was right, I should have learned to play the guitar but, I always figure one day I will, ‘still waiting to start, lol’ Once I had sung in front of people and had that rush of adrenaline, I knew that is what I wanted to do… Performing live is the most amazing thing for me, the time stands still, I get to be who I truly am, connected with the deepest part of myself.

BP – I’ve been playing guitar for almost 20 years now and I don’t see myself doing anything else but performing music. I was born to do this.
the Hellion: How do you think the internet has affected the music industry? Has it made it harder or easier on bands today?

CP – Ahhh, the internet…… Well, things have made a drastic turn since the internet has become such a common tool. From my experiences, it has hurt the industry in it’s old school ways of doing things to the point, it really doesn’t work that way anymore. But, it has helped in a way that you can cover way more ground, hit a much larger group, in an unrealistic short time and do it for much less than you could have in the early 90‘s and before. I see it still molding into what the next big thing will be.

CAT – Worst part is getting ripped off and artists music stolen, on a positive note, it can be the most vital and useful tool to be heard, seen and build a fan base.

BP – I think the Internet has had a positive effect on bands trying to get exposure. Facebook and other social media sites have helped tons of bands great for promoting shows and other artist. if it wasn’t for Facebook we would still be posting flyers on store windows and telephone poles. and that seemed like you didn’t reach a lot of people that way. now a band has a show everyone knows about it.
the Hellion:  I have seen some cool things at shows. One of the coolest is seeing a big name band geeking out by meeting another big band. Have you had any fanboy moments? And with whom?

CP – I’ve never really been star struck, so to speak. We are all people who put our shoes on one foot at a time. But I will say, being in the same room with a super star is a special thing. I guess I’d have to say, one of my previous bands opening for Prong in Southern California, and watching them watching us, was an overwhelming feeling. I listened to them way back and then decades later there’s Tommy Victor in front of me, listening and watching my band. It was an amazing moment.

CAT – Not really any fan’girl’ moments, yet…
the Hellion:  Given the opportunity to perform with any act from past or present what would that band be?

CAT – Guess it depends on if you mean open up for or if you mean, play in a band with…. Of course I’d love to open for Lamb of God, but any metal band that has earned my respect by loving what they do, humble, also honestly open about “YEAH – we made to the big show, and how thankful we are”  says a lot for me, doesn’t matter how big a band is, if the members are dicks, I won’t have an interest in them any longer…

CP – Given the chance to perform with any band…….. This is a hard one…….. I don’t think I can choose just one, lol.
     BP – Megadeth
the Hellion: In your own words, tell us why OPD matters and what they offer to the music world.

CP – OPD is a mixture of many influences and offers a style that has been morphed from all these influences to give the listener something that you don’t hear everyday, and for sure don’t see everyday. Something old, yet brand new fresh at the same time.

BP – OPD has a unique style to me. this band can play a show with tons of other bands from: trash metal to death metal n even progressive metal and still fit the bill. it’s a mixture of brutal and melodic songs lots of catchy riff and lyrics you can bang your head and get chills at the same time. tons of talent and so many influences.

the Hellion: This is the place to give shout out to those who got you here.

CP – We’d like to thank Billy Melancon, at Dark HouseStudios, Steve Helmer at Helmer Management, Richard Hudson of HyperMedia Group, James Hoskins of Doghouse Entertainment, ALL of the Knights Of Thor for their big support, our fellow band members for their commitment and patience, and most importantly, every single fan that has brought themselves to be counted as a fan of ours, You all are why we do this to begin with. Much love and thanks, and see ya soon.

CAT – We’d like to thank Billy Melancon, at Dark House studios, Steve Helmer at Helmer Management, Richard Hudson of HyperMedia Group, James Hoskins of Doghouse Entertainment, ALL of the Knights Of Thor for their big support, My band members for their commitment and patience, and most importantly, every single fan that has brought themselves to be counted as a fan of ours, You all are why we do this to begin with.       BP – I want to give a shout out to Cat, Chris, Joe and Charles for giving me this great opportunity to be in this awesome band. and all of the shredders I’ve listen to and have influenced me.
the Hellion:  You have the floor, you can speak your mind about anything you wish. And….go!

CAT – Hard to put into words what this band, and our music means to me, we are all friends, and I couldn’t imagine playing without any of them…They are my support system and this band is my outlet for pent-up energy..

CP – Each individual that hears us or comes to see a show, matters, we hope our music can touch upon the emotion and have some relevance for a fan about something going on in his or her life… We are all united in the love of music, we each fight our own battle and each of us matter. Music is how we connect; with those most like us.

BP – I think this band is going to blow up huge. I’m so excited to be a part of this and cannot wait for the road ahead! it’s going to be an awesome adventure with these guys!
And now you know about Our Precious Demise. Great band, wonderful personalities, and definitely goal oriented. Thank you OPD for taking the time to answer these questions. Special thanks to Stevil Helmer for making this happen.
     it’s loud, it’s dirty, it’s ROCK N’ ROLL!
