BARONESS SURVIVES TOUR BUS CRASH – THEIR ACCOUNT OF THE EVENT

Thanks to my friend Rusty Fryman for bringing this article to my attention.

We all know of the events of 09/27/1986. The music community lost a rising star when we lost Cliff Burton of Metllica in a horrific tour bus crash. The band Baroness had a guardian angel looking out for them the morning of their crash. The following article is courtesy of the Baroness website: http://baronessmusic.com/

On August 15th, just before 11 am, Baroness and our crew were involved in a very bad crash while on tour. The brakes in our bus failed completely, on a notoriously dangerous, incredibly steep (12% grade) hill in Monkton Combe, UK, on our way from a show Bristol to another show in Southampton. Our bus went entirely out of control, and we had no choice other than hitting a perpendicular guardrail going about 50 mph at the bottom of the hill. The guard rail and the 20 or 30 trees we ploughed through snapped like matchsticks as we went fully airborne and fell down more than 30 feet off of a viaduct to the ground below. Half of the band/crew were asleep while we lost our brakes, and a few of us were awake and sitting in the rear lounge. I was up front with our driver, and I bore witness to the entire thing. Once our brakes failed, the bus could do little more than gain momentum and plummet down the hill. There was nothing anyone on the bus could have done during our descent to avoid the crash, and no one, the local residents, the police or any of us can believe we survived the impact.

Most people who have been in accidents understand the pre-trauma sensation of time slowing down. There were almost two minutes during which I knew we were heading for a collision. It felt like two hours. I remember the sound of the air-brakes failing, and the panicked cursing of our driver as we slowly realized how desperate the situation was. I tried as hard as I could to yell and wake everyone up to prepare for impact. I remember the sounds of confusion from behind me as our collective terror rose. I remember seeing the guardrail split, then a cluster of trees smacking against the front windshield. While we were airborne my eyes met with our driver’s. I knew then that we each shared the same look on our face; and I won’t soon forget it. We had spent enough time in the air to appreciate, make peace with and accept a fate we thought inevitable, and we looked at one another with a horribly silent “goodbye” in our eyes.

When the bus hit the ground, I flew like a missile into the windshield. I can still see the double-paned auto glass turning blue and the spider-webbing cracks spreading outwards from the impact my body made. I hit the glass so hard, that the entire windshield flew from the frame to the ground, and I bounced back inside the bus. I landed on the ledge of the windshield. This came with an immediate and overwhelming pain throughout my body. I surveyed the damage to see instantly that my left leg was very obviously and badly broken. Then I lifted my arms forward to see if either had been damaged. My right arm was covered in burns, blood and broken glass, but working well enough. My left arm was crushed beyond belief, broken in the middle of the bone in my upper arm (humerus), and hanging 90 degrees backwar ds, with many spurs of bone poking through muscles and sinew at the surface of my skin. The bone was shattered into seven free-floating pieces, and my wrist and hand were swinging behind my back, spasming freely. Instinctively, I reached behind my back, grabbed my wrist and re-broke my arm forwards, hugging it to my chest, where it remained for the next three hours until it was cast in plaster. Meanwhile, I watched as some of the band was able to get off the bus and help the others, many of whom were broken-up as well, and several of whom were unconscious. There was blood, glass and diesel fuel everywhere.

We were all rushed to the hospital in Bath, and treated for our various injuries, broken arms, legs, vertebrae, bruises, cuts, etc. Our driver was air lifted to a separate hospital with many breaks as well. A few of us had to remain in the hospital for a few days, I was hospitalized for two weeks, following an eight-hour surgery in which my arm was rebuilt with the aid of 2 massive titanium plates, 20 screws and a foot-and-a-half of wire. The 15″ incision took almost 50 staples to close up. I was left completely immobilized for the remainder of my hospital stay, able to do next-to-nothing on my own and in need of constant care. Following those excruciating first two weeks, I was quite literally stuck in an apartment for another three weeks with my family while waiting for my doctor to allow me to safely board an airplane, for fear of bloodclots and swelling. I have just this past week returned back to the US and my home, where I am wheelchair-bound for another several weeks of physical therapy, learning to use my arm and leg again.

While I cannot lift a glass of water to my lips to drink with my left arm and hand, I am still able to play music with it. I picked up a guitar and played the day after I returned. Not without pain (for the time being), but the hand still acts out the creative impulses I give it. I’m told I was quite lucky to have regained any use at all of my hand and arm, though I have sustained quite extensive nerve damage. In spite of this and against my logic and reason, when I pick up an instrument, my hand remembers exactly what to do. It’s far from perfect, and will require a lot of therapy in order to recover mobility and strength, but I am encouraged by the ability I have been allowed. I do not believe in superstitious signs, but I am truly overwhelmed to have been granted the continued use of my hands.

As a result of the crash, I feel encouraged not only to recover, but to move forward with Baroness, as we had been doing every day previous to August 15th. This accident has inflicted an injury which has left its mark on the band: physically, mentally and spiritually. In order to rehabilitate ourselves fully, we must work towards and then past the goals we had prior to the accident. I will consider our immediate recovery a success only on the day we plug back in to play another show.

We cannot allow this accident, which I believe is unrelated to the band or our music, to slow down or stifle what has become so much more than a passionate hobby for the four of us. Through Baroness, we have discovered a method by which we may harness our drive to create, and channel all the emotion, anxiety and pain in our lives into something constructive. Music is the universal means of communication we have chosen to express ourselves. Our message has never been one of the absolute positive or negative, neither black nor white. True life occurs within the shades of grey, and I see this experience form that perspective. It seems only fitting to me that we continue working towards creating and performing again as soon as possible, as this band and its music are the vehicle through which we grow as individuals, artists and brothers. The injury the band suffered is an injury to my family and loved ones. Rather than allow it to become a wedge that forces us apart, I would like to see this experience become part of the glue that strengthens us. We have only begun to accomplish what we set out to do through this band. There is so much more to say, and though we do need to heal up a bit; we will not allow any of those things to be left unsaid.

I have no regrets about touring. I don’t blame music or the touring lifestyle for my current physical state, or for the accident itself. It happened the same way all things happen: randomly. If I was a carpenter, and I was injured on the way to the job-site, I wouldn’t consider quitting my job. That is truly how I see this situation. Baroness doesn’t stop because we got hurt on the way to work. We love what we do much more than that, and we have chosen this path because it offers us an unpredictable adventure. With any adventure that involves travel, and with any real passionate pursuit, one will occasionally come face-to-face with the reality of living on the other side of the yellow line. I didn’t choose to be a musician in order to live a risk-free life, safely avoiding bumps and bruises. I didn’t choose to play music because it seemed like a simple opportunity to make some quick cash. Nor did I ever make the assumption that things would get easier as we progressed.

We can do nothing but attempt to make something constructive and beautiful out of all this disaster, and we are well on the way to becoming active again. I have used this time, stuck inside my own head, to consider the importance of music and Baroness in my life. I can say, after nearly 6 weeks of reflection, that I feel more resolute and passionate about our music than ever. I have come to realize the importance of time in this particular equation, that is, I have none to waste and none to spare. There is no better moment than now, broken and in physical stasis, to devote ourselves more fully towards our art than ever. We cannot allow the traumatic fallout of our crash to cripple us internally. It seems simple: the shows we have cancelled we will reschedule and play in the future. It isn’t going to happen next week nor will it be next month. But it will happen. We will be back on tour as soon as we possibly can.

There was one moment in the crash that cut me deeply. For one heartbeat and one tiny sliver of time, I became disconnected entirely. It was, specifically, the moment I impacted with the glass. In that barest heartbeat of a moment, I came face to face with the infinite. I didn’t see a light, or the tunnel or hear any music. Nor did I get a “best-of” montage of my life. Instead, I felt the tip of my nose brush up against the very same fate I had accepted moments before. I looked into a cold, unreflective mirror. It was the dark, silent, dispassionate logic of the end. I realized in that moment that life can be seen as a light switch: “on” or “off”. When the moment passed and I heard the screaming, felt the pain, and tasted my own blood, I was overcome with joy. I was ecstatic to be back amidst all that chaos and horror because it was alive and real. I finally glimpsed the relative importance of all things. The support of our fans, our friends and our families has real meaning to me now. I say that now honestly, without false humility. Thank you. Everyone.

KISS – MONSTER HAS ARRIVED!

WOO HOO! A new KISS record! Ok, ok, I know it’s not the complete KISS (Peter and Ace will ALWAYS be missed by me) but this record is quite good. I felt like a little kid again listening to this record. The songs seem back in their classic KISS format. I have always liked the fact that KISS used all four members as lead vocalists on various songs. Granted there is only one Tommy Thayer and one Eric Singer lead vocals the two songs are amazing. “Outta This World” is a fitting tribute to the “Space Man” persona. Tommy’s vocals are solid and his playing is reminiscent of KISS of old. “All for the Love of Rock & Roll”  is easily my favorite track on this record. It takes me back to a day when life was fun and everyone was having a good time. Eric handles the vocals perfectly keeping the “Catman” alive and well. Gene and Paul remain steadfast as always leading KISS as they have from day one. So, thank you KISS thank you for a MONSTER record. Do yourself a favor and pick a copy up, even if you haven’t’ been a fan This record might change that!

BEARD, A BAND, AN INTERVIEW, AN EXPERIENCE, AND A BLACK UNICORN

http://www.reverbnation.com/beardisbullshit

It was a Sunday afternoon, that being said, I was feeling a bit “Beardish” and it seemed like a great day to interview them. I pulled into the parking lot of Charley’s Records and Tapes (yes tapes) and saw the Bearded ones awaiting my arrival. We snapped a few shots while we waited for my beautiful camera woman to show up and shoot the interview. When she arrived in all her  glory we retired to the inner sanctum of Charley’s to get into the heads of Beard. We talked, held hands, and sang “Kumbaya”. When we were done we had all reached spiritual nirvana,  a Black Unicorn appeared, and I finally was able to comprehend the band that was Beard. If you want to see the interview check it out at: http://rockunight.com/

Their CD: Black Unicorn will be released on 10/26/12 at Hooligan’s nightclub. This will be an event not to be missed. You want more? Here is the video for “Amp Whore”:

Now that I have seen the Black Unicorn I have achieved a new plane of existence and shall now be known as H. Beard…….

A MESSAGE FROM MY GOOD FRIEND KURT ARFT

Image

I just saw this on a friends wall and nothing grinds my gears more than when a band doesn’t respond, answer, interact with their fans. What’s even worse is this was a local band that snubbed this fan. And they wonder why they don’t have a fan base or are not getting anywhere. Local or national, it’s total BS and a total lack of respect being shown when a band does this. Being in a band does not give you a license to be a dick!
“I bought a CD from a local, popular band a very long time ago. I misplaced it and was heartbroken. For months, I called, messaged, texted and posted on the FB walls of the members of this band to please please let me buy another one. With no response AT ALL for months, I found my misplaced one!!! What’s sad, is I don’t even feel like listening to it now because of the blow offs and snobby attitudes from this band for months. Way to go guys! You will not keep fans acting like that!!” – Kurt Arft

DARKSITE – THE DARK ARMY AWAKENS!

http://thedarkarmy.net

DRUMZ = DAVEY
VOX = ROB
BASS = JENNA
GUITAR = ADZ

A while back I became friends with a guy named Adz who played guitar. My new friend and I shared a lot of similar interests, thoughts, and dreams. We grew close and became like brothers. We shared highs, lows, and just our general daily experiences. He kept me abreast of the happenings of his band DARKSITE. And now I will tell you.

After knowing each other through most of their lives four friends were drawn together in the darkest waste of South Wales in the U.K. creating a genre-spanning band that will defy all modern conventional rock and metal music. With an intensity and power of originality that is rarely found in a generation they created something truly special “DARKSITE”. Forming in mid 2009 it took 3 months for the line-up to become the solid state it now has, following no conventions in writing styles and no restrictions of genre after another 2 months of writing and constant rehearsals the band hit the live stage and the legend was born. With more determination, conviction and commitment than anyone will ever encounter within 8 months a true force for anyone to reckon with was built. with their debut album ” As the line divides ” out worldwide as of the 2nd of april 2012 the Dark Army will rise.

Bold words, but do they hold weight? I got my copy of AS THE LINE DIVIDES and have given a thorough going over, several times. Great record period.  Released on Brutal Elite Records LTD this CD SMOKES! Here’s a couple of reviews I found:

Ok, to start of I have not seen this band live but I bought this album on word of mouth as a friend of mine used to know one of the band , I can honestly say that I am still in shock at how genuinely addictive this album is,  I’ve been into metal music for many years and this is without question one of the best albums I have heard in the last ten years , I wont drone on the way most reviewers do , all I will say is if you love the greats ( PANTERA , METALLICA , MEGADETH , MACHINE HEAD , SLAYER , 5FDP and countless more ) then you need to own this album , I know it may not be to everyone’s taste but for the true metal fans out there you are in for a rare treat. – ms music fan 1

A truly well composed first album, with melodic vocals and hard-hitting riffs it is truly the work you would expect form a band that have been on the road for years! I must say it has knocked the other cd’s out of my player and has been on loop for quite some time since. Well worth the purchase. Expect great things from these guys 🙂 – Marc Gillings

8. In The Name Of The Father 3:38
9. Not Follow (On My Own) 4:12

Heavy, in your face, getting it done METAL! This CD is one that keeps finding its way back into my player. A MUST listen to if you like your music HARD! This band is full of hunger, passion, and raw talent. All they are asking for is a listen and they believe their music will stand on its own. HATE, DISCONTENT, AND JEALOUSY

There’s been FAR TOO MUCH of those things lately. I know I’ve discussed it before, but WHAT THE HELL HAPPENED?  I mean the Rock N’ Roll community needs to get behind each other and lift each other up, not tear each other apart. I often times reflect to the day when Rock fans would gather in the parking lots of shows, outside of record stores, at parties, AND HAVE A GOOD TIME! Sure there were discussions about how one thought this band was better than another, and there was the occasional fisticuffs, but for the most part we were there to celebrate Rock N’ Roll  music. I see far too many people these days dragging down someone for their successes and trash talking them instead of congratulating them, and giving them advice or support. I support each and every artist who makes the effort to step up and share their art. Won’t you? Will YOU help to tighten back up the GLOBAL Rock N’ Roll community? MIKE “GUTTER” GARCIA – GET TO KNOW HIM!

One of the most “colorful” local performers I know is Gutter. He’s a hard-working, fun-loving musician that doesn’t EVER slow down. Let’s see what he has to say:

Tell me about how you were introduced to music.

Gutter: When I was just a little kid my Dad played guitar and harmonica plus my Grandfather played classical guitar. I used to sit around and thought it was so cool just to listen to them play.

My mom, may she rest in peace,  was one of my greatest music mentors. To whom do you attribute your love of music to?
Gutter: As a young tyke I used to listen to American top 40… he-he. Plus I hung around the older kids in the neighborhood and they turned me on to Deep Purple, Montrose, Robin Trower, Sabbath and I was hooked early on to some killer rock n roll!

What was the catalyst that  lead you to decide to become a musician?
Gutter: While listening to my Grandfather play and saw how it mesmerized people, I said that want to learn to do that.

Did you have any formal musical training or did you just wing it?
Gutter:  yes, I took a few lessons from my Gramps then took guitar lessons at Luchetti’s music store back in the day and learned the basics and pretty much winged it from there.

I know you as primarily a bassist, was that your first choice? Do you play other instruments?
Gutter: I was originally a guitarist. I played guitar in my first two bands but there were no bass players so I bought a Rickenbacker and started becoming a bass player. I still write my originals on guitar and have to figure out bass parts later.

What are some lessons from previous bands that you carry with you through today?
Gutter:  Just be true to yourself and play what you feel and what makes you happy. Playing music is supposed to be great fun and never a chore.

Tell me about the “Gutter” moniker?
Gutter:  Well, back when I was in a band in Hollyweird my only transportation was my motorcycle so my singer & guitarist would pick me and my bass up for band rehearsals and they would always be late. So there I’d be sitting on the curb waiting for them with my bass and they would say, “There’s the Gutter Dweller” and that became my nickname…Gutter Dweller, which was quickly shortened to “Gutter”…hah! and people still call me that to this day.

What are some of the many projects your working on these days?
Gutter:  Well, I’m currently playing in three bands. I’m in an original rock band called “Rusty Tramp” which plays awesome party rock. I also have another darker sounding rock band called “Darken the Day” and we are actually playing our debut gig opening for my other band Rusty Tramp’s CD release party coming up soon. Plus, I have an awesome classic rock cover band called “LocoMofo”

http://www.facebook.com/RustyTramp

http://www.facebook.com/DarkenTheDay

http://www.facebook.com/locomofo.nm

People are sometimes surprised at what they find in each others music collections. Are there any surprises in your collection?
Gutter: Oh man, I have a very extensive music collection. There are many surprises from Al Di Meola to Zeke.I have all kinds of styles in there but mostly metal, punk, prog and a lot of obscure stuff that a lot of people have never even heard of.

Speak your mind freely, the floor is yours:
Gutter:  Well, like I said before, be true to yourself and your music and everybody has to support your fellow musicians and the music scene to keep it alive and well!! Cheers.

Here’s a taste of LOCOMOFO:

My man Gutter, thanks!

CHARLIE M.F. OWENS CATCHES UP WITH MR. KEITH ROBERT!

Image
Ladies and gentlemen… a moment or two with Mr. Keith Robert
1. What were you listening to as you were growing up?
Music was the first and most important thing in my household as a child.. My earliest memory is KISS. I mean c’mon, my crib was underneath the KISS Spirit of 76′ poster!! But my dad had me listening to Billy Joel and Bad Company along with the Beatles. Mom had me wrapped up in Air Supply and Michael Bolton. Brothers would bring the Queen, Crüe and RATT in. But I was head over heels for KISS. just non stop!! Right down to me doing impressions of them all in my bedroom and air guitar!!
2. I know you are an Ace Frehley fan, and also Eddie Ojeda of Twisted Sister. What other players had an influence on you and your playing?

Oh man!!! Always the toughest question. I get influenced every day I listen to music. But truly let’s start at the top, Jimmy Page! The dirtiest motha trucker ever on guitar. I truly model my sound and feel along Page’s guide book. He was great at being sloppy and it totally turned me on to the style I love today. But let’s not forget about Brian Forsythe, The Young Brothers, EVH (mainly for his choice of clothes) And honestly I swear on my guitar, John Bonham is one of my biggest influences. His rhythms are insane and patterns like his, get my creative juices flowing.

3. Was there someone outside of your influences that opened you up to or pushed you into a musical direction?
Yes! All the assholes who told me I wouldn’t ever be able to play!! Like the bullies in school, what pricks!!! On a positive note, people like teachers in my past schooling where very cool. Always pushing me to go further in life. But on a daily basis I get influenced by the most basic things, such as conversations with people I hardly know. As much as I can come off strange and spaced to a lot of people, I’m very open minded and I listen to everyone’s story. Which influences me on all levels.
4. The first time I saw you play was with your former band Wildstreet, and I thought to myself, and I know I’ve said it several times since then. “That dude is what ya want in a guitar player”. Not only the technical skills that you possess but the way you worked the stage and the crowd. You have fun when you play. Sucking up a little I know. The question is… How do you see yourself as a guitar player?
Your the best, I’m so humbled to hear that from you. You know what the truth is man? I love to entertain on stage. KISS was and still is my main drive on putting on a show… Gene & Paul understood that, Mick Jagger understands it, KIX GETS IT!! Dude there is something so great about entertaining. I know where I stand as a guitarist. I wish upon a star I could fly up the neck like EVH or Steve Vai, but I just don’t! I play for the song, I play for the band, I play the shit right on guitar and then I focus on grabbing people’s attention from stage and making them feel they spent their money accordingly. What a waste of time when musicians stand still or don’t let loose. Even the band Phish are entertainers! Have you ever seen Trey run around on stage? Brilliant!! When i’m in a great rock band, all I wanna do is give 100% to the music and the crowd. Nothing is better then seeing people smile and enjoying the moment.
5. The decision on leaving Wildstreet. Was it a difficult one to make? What tipped it over the edge” so to speak?
It was a easy decision. I have never publicly spoken about it until now. Look, I loved that band more than any band I ever played with. But the fire died. . . And it killed me. They (Eric, Jimmie, Ali and Beck) gave me a new lease on life. And it was the best time of my life, musically. I believed WS had all the potential in the world. But when money starts affecting every single move we made, it forced me away. I’ve been honest about the business side of music my whole life. Don’t be fooled, I’m in this for the money not for anything else. I get self satisfaction in other ways. Playing my instrument is fun, but I don’t do it for free. Along with money issues, when Jimmie left, WS was over. Him and Eric created it. Without him, rubbish. Yeah we fought, yeah we disagreed, yeah I was a maniac… But when we played to 4 (which we did) or 4000 people, it felt fucking GREAT. I wish we played to 100,000 people, cause I believe the original WS deserved it. It’s a time in my life I can never dismiss.
6. What are your thoughts on it today? Regrets, closure, relief?

If we qualified for it and someone offered the original WS a shit load of money, I’d be the first one at rehearsal. I have no regrets, it was a great time and I learned a lot from them musically. The best part of it all, was leading me to meeting my future wife. I do have relief though since, now I can afford things.

7. Was Wildstreet the first band you were in?

Fuck no! Does a KISS tribute band qualify?! LOL well that was my first real touring act. Then I played with MTV’s Jesse Camp, remember that?? Man we toured with Alice Cooper and N’SYNC!!! I also played with the Flames, ZäNKT and had a killer brush on stage with Frank Dimino from ANGEL. However, WS was the first real band I considered to be contenders.

8. Moving on to the present. Say you want to start a new band. What is the first piece of the puzzle you want to put into place?

DRUMMER!!! Screw everything else!! If he don’t play like John Bohnam, then I stay home and pet my cat. I’ve been trying so hard to find the right elements but its truly a puzzle. Ya know… It’s got just be right, dudes need to really wanna rock. I have always had good success when a drummer and I click and can arrange songs. I admire great drummers. A solid bassist and an egotistical frontman is the American dream a solid 4 piece rhythm exploration is all I ask for.

9. What does the future hold for you? New band, writing, more touring etc…?
I honestly wish I knew. I want nothing more than a band of brothers to call my own. But if it doesn’t just have the right dudes then it ain’t worth shit. As of current, I am trying to just take a back seat and let it all set in and just happen. Been working, tech’n for bands and just staying close to the scene. I realized I can not force it anymore. If if happens, it happens. “Que sera, sera” – Johnny Thunders.
10. You mentioned to me recently that you have been “Trying to let the music pan out right now. It’s been so uninspiring”. Would you care to elaborate that?
You know, I hit L.A. pretty hard hard in its face when I arrived. I got my self into a touring act and after the Ted Nugent tour I basically wanted to throw up in my mouth and spit it on people’s faces. I am kinda disgusted with “finding an act” it just seems so silly, going back and fourth into bands to get paid us such a drag. That’s not what music really is to me. Music is about being yourself with others being themselves thus for creating a unique brand of look and sound!! WHERE THE FUCK has that gone in the music business? Van Halen was a unique band. They were punk ass kids from Pasadena who had a plan, partied, played their asses off and DID NOT TAKE THIS SHIT SO SERIOUSLY, Fucking A!!! Have I lost your attention in my ramblings!?
11. How do you feel about where the music industry is currently and where it is headed?

Transition. And just like I always say, I was born in the wrong time period. Well once again I’m in the wrong time wrong place. Currently it’s a mess! No ones really sure how to sell records. (I am, publish vinyl records and sell em only that way so people have no choice but to buy a record, listen to the record. The entire record! Not this EP shit!!)

Where is it headed? Up shits creek with out a paddle! If your lucky to have a unique band who can tour, then you can make money. But the money is in touring and live events.

12. In your opinion what will it take for a band, especially a Rock band, to have a generous amount of success today?
I think a lot of bands today have “generous” success. What I don’t see today is SUPERGROUPS. it’s just too wide open to have Rock Super Group success anymore. Back in the 70’s it was meat and potatoes. Now it’s, vegan, vegetarian, meat, salads and fast food. Anyone hungry by the way!??

13. I snagged your iPod… What am I gonna hear? Any surprises?
What the hell is an iPod!!!!??? Is that that thing you wear over a busted eye? How about my vinyl collection? Notice how I rearrange your own questions?
Well my vinyl collection is small but, Zeppelin, old blues albums, Hanoi Rocks, Clapton, Aerosmith. But my iPod changes all the time. I ain’t got much room on my iPod so most of the time I switch it out with whatever I need to learn on guitar or what I absolutely have to have which is … TWISTED SISTER LIVE AT THE HAMMERSMITH!! Dee rules.
